March 2017

Each year, events held by the City of Johns Creek’s draw thousands of people to our exceptional community. Some live here, some are returning, and some are joining us for the first time. Our events are an important and unique way for us to meet, entertain, educate, and spend time together as a community.

Our upcoming 2017 schedule of events promises to be a great lineup, featuring bands under the summer skies at the Burkhalter Amphitheater, kids summer camps, new athletic classes, and a special visit from the Vietnam Memorial Wall - “The Wall that Heals.”

In 2016, more than 50,000 people from Johns Creek and the metro Atlanta area attended one of our more than 30 events. We anticipate that this year will attract even more. The City and our Recreation and Parks Division will continue to offer a wide variety of family friendly events for everyone’s enjoyment.   The new 2017 Recreation and Parks brochure is now online, so please take a look to plan out your spring and summer schedules.

Our first event of 2017, which is a highlight of this year’s schedule is “The Wall that Heals” exhibit from March 30 – April 2 at Newtown Park. The Wall is a 250-foot replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, along with a mobile Education Center, that travels around the country once a year.  The Wall honors the more than three million Americans who served in the U.S. Armed forces during the Vietnam War and it bears the names of the more than 58,000 men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam.  Johns Creek is only one of two cities in Georgia that The Wall will visit this year.

Our popular concert series at the Mark Burkhalter Amphitheater in Newtown Park is another highlight of our season. Since 2014, the City has offered a fun and unique line up of musical acts to provide free concerts that cross cultures, styles, and genres for music lovers of all ages. This year’s concert series includes four shows featuring Gump Fiction, Shawn Mullins, Stooges Brass Band & AJ Ghent Band, and closes the season with the Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra.

For residents and non-residents ages 62 and over, the Park Place Active Adult Center at Newtown Park offers activities like bocce ball, movie matinees, book club, and bingo, as well as social clubs and day trips. Programming also includes exercise classes like yoga, Zumba, and the Silver Sneakers / FLEX program.

From our Spring Festival in April and movies in the park summer series, to our Fall Family festival and annual holiday festivities in November and December, we hope to provide a brief pause from your busy schedules to enjoy all that our community has to offer.

We are very proud that with our growing parks system, our ability to provide regionally recognized events and activities will only continue to grow and transform into an even more robust and wide reaching selection of community activities.

I look forward to seeing you out and about the City! Please be sure to stop and say hello and share your ideas or thoughts about how we can continue to make Johns Creek the exceptional City we call home.
