Newtown Park & Recreation Highlights

July is National Parks and Recreation Month, and the City is highlighting a different park each week.

Newtown Park, 3150 Old Alabama Road

Newtown Park was established in 1999 after Friends of Newtown Park lobbied the Fulton County Commission to save the land for recreation. When it was built, Newtown Park had three multi-purpose athletic fields, three baseball-softball diamonds, a bathroom, picnic pavilions, basketball courts, tennis courts, and two playgrounds.

Since the City of Johns Creek was launched in 2006, several amenities have been added, including a top-of-the-line dog park, an amphitheater, Park Place adult activity center, a community garden, two miles of trails, a bocce ball court, and the Johns Creek Veterans Memorial Walk. The 52-acre park is the site of many of the City’s community activities, such as Movies at Newtown Park, the summer concert series, Pup-a-Palooza, the Fall Family Festival, and Touch-a-Truck, as well as fitness classes and workshops.

Three fun things to do at Newtown Park

1. Take your dog to the dog park. The dog park features 2 acres of artificial turf, sprinklers for dogs to play in, obstacles, water fountains and shade.

2. Visit the Johns Creek Veterans Memorial Walk. The Veterans Memorial Walk, a project by the Johns Creek Veterans Association, is a contemplative sanctuary for people to reflect on the sacrifices and service of our men and women in uniform. The landscaped pathway includes bricked plazas with etched monuments and benches, a fountain, and a gazebo. In 2020, The Wall That Heals, a 250-foot replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, was installed at the Memorial Walk.

3. Take a fitness class. The City offers Free Outdoor Fitness at the Amphitheater.

The dog park was built by Beneful dog food company after a Johns Creek resident won a national contest.
