The City of Johns Creek recently received New Leaf level certification for the Atlanta Regional Commission’s (ARC) Green Communities Program, emphasizing the City’s intent to become an officially certified Green Community within two years.
Developed by the ARC, the Green Communities Program is a voluntary sustainability certification program designed to assist local governments in reducing their overall environmental impact. By adhering to specifically identified measures within the program, Johns Creek can implement policies, practices, and actions for the community to achieve the goal of becoming a leader on environmental sustainability.
The certification process includes achieving multiple measures in local government and the community to earn points for certification at different levels (bronze, silver, gold, and platinum). The categories by which Johns Creek will be measured include green building, energy efficiency, green power, water use reduction and efficiency, trees and greenspace, transportation, recycling and waste reduction, land use, education, and innovation.
The New Leaf designation serves as the preliminary step to achieve the Green Communities certification. Johns Creek’s next step in the process is bronze certification.
