Shakerag Park’s synthetic turf field opens for play

November 21, 2017

Shakerag TurfThe City of Johns Creek’s third synthetic turf field opened is now ready for play.

Funded by the parks bond, which was approved by voters in November 2016, the main field at Shakerag Park has been converted to synthetic turf.

The soccer field and lacrosse field at Newtown Park were also converted to synthetic turf and opened for play in October.

Synthetic turf field installation is consistent with the recommendations of the Recreation and Parks Strategic Plan. Additionally, the new turf fields at both locations will allow the upcoming sports seasons to occur with minimal disruption and will enable leagues to increase their play time in conditions that would have otherwise been lost to rain.

The Johns Creek Parks Bond will also be used in the build out of the City’s five recently purchased parks, which more than doubled its available parkland over the past two years.  Construction design documents are moving forward for the pocket parks on State Bridge and Bell and Boles roads, the neighborhood park on Morton Road, and for the linear park in Technology Park.  The City is still reviewing options for its largest park of nearly 200 acres, which is located along the Chattahoochee River, and will continue to work with the public before the City Council determines its final design concept.
