City Council approves new turf fields at two City parks

July 26, 2017

Shakerag ParkThe Johns Creek City Council approved a contract to proceed with the installation of synthetic turf fields at Newtown Park and Shakerag Park.  The City will utilize the services of Field Turf USA, INC to oversee the installation of two fields at Newtown Park and one at Shakerag Park.

“I am thrilled with the decision of the City Council to move forward with this significant improvement to our parks,” said Mayor Mike Bodker.  “Our residents will be able to greatly benefit with more field utilization for the upcoming sports seasons and year round.”

The field conversion at Newtown Park includes the main soccer field and lacrosse field.  At Shakerag Park, the track field will be converted to synthetic turf. Once construction begins, installation is anticipated to take up to 30 days.

Synthetic turf field installation is consistent with the recommendations of the Recreation and Parks Strategic Plan. Additionally, the new turf fields at both locations will allow the upcoming sports seasons to occur with minimal disruption and will enable leagues to increase their play time in conditions that would have otherwise been lost to rain.

Field Turf USA, Inc. is the same company contracted by Fulton County Schools for the design and installation of synthetic turf fields used by the school system. The fields at Newtown Park and Shakerag Park will be designed and installed according to the same specifications and regulations used by Fulton County Schools.

According to the agreement approved by the City Council, the cost for installation of the three fields will not exceed $2,004,606. The Parks Bond, approved by voters in November 2016, will fund the project.
