A part of the Johns Creek Police's Community Oriented Policing Services, the JCPD Bicycle Patrol works in teams of two, riding specially equipped Trek police bikes to regularly patrol the city's parks, shopping centers and residential neighborhoods.
Many U.S. cities have taken this more-familiar approach to law enforcement for a number of years, finding that it offers a number of advantages to their overall patrol abilities.
For example, a bicycle allows an officer access to areas that a car cannot go, such as trails, side yards and alleys; a bicycle is less obtrusive than a patrol car, providing a low-key response, which is necessary in some situations; and a bicycle is very effective when pursuing a suspect on foot.
And it's much easier for people to approach a police officer to say "hi" when the officer is on a bicycle and not in a patrol car.
Plus, children love bicycles, so they end up asking a lot of questions, giving an officer the opportunity for an informal chat about bike safety.

The JCPD Bicycle Patrol also participates in neighborhood meetings, city events and bike safety rodeos.
