New FEMA-DNR flood maps to affect some Johns Creek parcels

1/23/2012

Georgia Flood MapFederal Emergency Management Agency and Department of Natural Resources officials have redrawn flood maps for the state of Georgia which will affect flood insurance or use of specific parcels within many municipalities this fall, including Johns Creek.

The City's Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis of these maps shows that more than 700 properties are considered in high-risk areas for the first time; more than 100 parcels went from high risk to low risk.

Flood maps must be updated periodically because water flow and volume can change. Areas that in the past weren't susceptible to flooding may be vulnerable to rising water in the future.

Planners, local officials, engineers and builders also use the maps to determine where and how to build new structures and developments. FEMA requires flood insurance for structures in high risk zones.

The City hosted a public information meeting, Jan. 18, at which federal and state officials explained the maps and how they will affect flood insurance or use of specific parcels within the City.
