Span to help students avoid water when trail floods

flood-prone portion of trailJohns Creek Recreation and Parks is planning a pedestrian bridge over a flood-prone spot on a trail between Shakerag Park and River Trail Middle School.

The 40-foot bridge will be used primarily by students walking between athletic fields at Shakerag Park and the middle school. During heavy rains, overflow from a nearby pond spills across a low spot in the trail, which forces students to wade or tip-toe through water to get to and from Physical Education classes.

The $15,000 span will be made of a durable composite material about 2 feet higher than the lowest spot on the trail, 8 feet wide and will be ADA compliant. It will be built above the current trail, and will be finished by the first week of January to avoid interfering with school activities. The bridge is intended for pedestrians, and will not accommodate vehicles.
