Johns Creek Police present annual honors

Officer Mark Johnson receives the 2010 Officer of the Year award from Chief Densmore, Oct. 29, at the JCPD's 2nd Annual Awards Banquet.

Recognizing outstanding contributions by members of the Johns Creek Police Department in 2009-2010, Police Chief Ed Densmore announced this year's award and medal winners at the JCPD's 2nd Annual Awards Dinner, October 29.

"We appreciate each of these individuals and their exceptional law enforcement service to the department and the Johns Creek community," said Densmore. "They consistently go beyond their assigned duties to help us set the standard other police departments strive to follow."

  • Chief's Award - Sgt. Jon Moses, who brought 16 years of experience in law enforcement and information technology to oversee the department's transition to a new records management system, and the launch of the city's 911 Communications Center.

  • Officer of the Year - Officer Mark Johnson, who played a crucial part in the records management systems transition, training patrol officers in mobile field reporting and Community Service programs.

  • Leadership Award - Lt. Roland Castro for his vision and leadership in supervising the Criminal Investigations Division, revising its policies and preparing it for the CALEA inspection.

  • Special CALEA Recognition - Accreditation Manager Cheri Pickard, for overseeing the departments' successful national (Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies) and state (Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police) accreditations.

  • Squad of the Year - Traffic Safety Unit (Sgt. Ronnie Young, Corporal Charles Kistler, Corporal Mike Thomas, Officer Darrin Garrett) for their exemplary professionalism and efforts in helping reduce traffic accidents in Johns Creek.

  • Employee of the Year - Paulette Funderburk, who serves as the agency TAC (Terminal Agency Coordinator) and transitioned the department to GCIC's (Georgia Crime Information Center) online training system.

  • Life-saving Medals - Officer Lincoln Brown, Officer Julia Cobb, Lt. Nick Curry, and Sgt. Ben Finley for freeing an unconscious man trapped in a burning car; Lt. Jason Harper for saving a man's life with CPR; and Corporal James Harris for saving a woman's life with CPR.

  • Honorable Service Awards - Corporal Min Cha for his work on North Metro Swat and as a detective in the Special Investigations Unit; and Sgt. Todd Hood for his courage in taking decisive action against an armed suspect firing on another police officer.

  • Exceptional Duty certificates - Lt. Nick Curry and Lt. Chris Byers for their work on developing the JCPD's Underage Drinking Diversion program, the only one in the state of Georgia.

Promoted officers were also recognized: Major Brian Weaver, Lt. Jason Harper, Lt. Paul Michaud, Sgt. Dion Smith, Sgt. James Zebley, Corporal Robert Russo, and Corporal Greg Whitaker.
