The Johns Creek Fire Department has been named the Muscular Dystrophy Association's "2009 Rookie of the Year," having raised $14,009 for the non-profit last year.
"Johns Creek Firefighters are truly heroes for MDA. The dedication and heart they have for MDA and our patient families is extraordinary," said MDA Fundraising Coordinator Valerie Winship. "We deeply appreciate their partnership."
During its first year of fundraising for the non-profit, Johns Creek Firefighters held "Fill-the-Boot" drives at various locations throughout August, collecting money donated by the residents, businesses and visitors of Johns Creek.
"We couldn't have done this without the support of the community. The heartfelt generosity of the people here continues to amaze us," said Johns Creek Assistant Fire Chief Pat Wilson. "We thank everyone who donated."
Since 1954, firefighters across the U.S. have been one of the MDA's biggest supporters, contributing a substantial part of the total funds raised each year leading up to the annual Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon on Labor Day Weekend.
In 2010, nearly $59 million was raised for the non-profit health agency, which is dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis ("Lou Gehrig's Disease") and related diseases by funding worldwide research. The Association also provides comprehensive health care and support services, advocacy and education.
