Johns Creek City Council member Ivan Figueroa has been named a panelist on a "Meet Georgia's Hispanic Elected Officials" event by Home Depot on Oct. 6 at its Atlanta headquarters.
"I'm honored and flattered to be asked to participate," Figueroa said. "I hope that it inspires more Hispanics to become politically engaged in local government. It's nice to see a major corporation recognizing the diversity in our community."
Councilman Figueroa, now in his second term, is one of a handful of elected Hispanic officials in Georgia. The event is intended to introduce officials to Home Depot workers.
"The Home Depot is delighted to be able to host several of Georgia's distinguished Hispanic elected officials as part of our Hispanic Heritage Month," said Juan Echeverry, vice president of Hispanic Markets. "We hope that having our Hispanic leaders here to speak will encourage our Hispanic associates to embrace their proud heritage and bring awareness of the growing Hispanic influence in the greater U.S. marketplace to all of our associates."
Other panelists include State Rep. Pete Marin, a Democrat, and State Rep. David Casas, a Republican, both of Gwinnett County, and State Court Judge Tony DelCampo from DeKalb County.
The panelists will introduce themselves to Home Depot associates, and talk about their background and how they came to be elected officials.
Figueroa, 49, was elected to the City Council as one of the City's first council members in 2006.
Figueroa got his start in public service by becoming involved in the Abbotts Cove Homeowners Association. Later, he helped lobby Fulton County for more transportation money for Johns Creek. He subsequently was asked to participate in crafting the Fulton County land use plan, and then became active in the effort to incorporate the Johns Creek community into a city.
He is married and has two grown daughters.
