New city hosts world sporting event for the first time

Now that golf's final major tournament of 2010 has said goodbye to Wisconsin's Whistling Straits, the City of Johns Creek, Georgia, is preparing to be the Host City of next year's 93rd PGA Championship, August 8-14, 2011.
Returning once again to the Atlanta Athletic Club, the Championship has been held at the historic club twice before (1981 and 2001), but this is the first time since the City of Johns Creek was incorporated in 2006.
"We are so proud to have the Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek," said Mayor Mike Bodker. "To help the club host an event of this magnitude is both a challenge and a unique opportunity for a city less than four years old."
For the past year, Johns Creek has been working with the club and the PGA (Professional Golfers Association) to plan the logistics and operations for the world sporting event, expected to bring over 35,000 people into the city daily during the week-long tournament.
"The City of Johns Creek is a wonderful community to serve as the host for the 93rd PGA Championship," said Tournament Director Ryan Cannon. "Their support and enthusiasm are vital to the overall success of the Championship."
At Whistling Straights, 156 players (including 97 of the top world-ranked) from 22 countries started the field; an estimated 600+ million people in 190 countries tuned into 26 hours of high def broadcasts by CBS Sports, Turner Sports, the Golf Channel and PGA.com; 700 media representatives from 13 countries were at the event; 3,400 volunteers participated; 35-miles of television cable was laid under and above ground.
Similar numbers are expected next year. "We've got out our work cut out for us, but we look forward to welcoming the world to Johns Creek," said Bodker.
