8/9/2010

Johns Creek Citizens Police AcademyThe next class of Johns Creek's Citizens Police Academy starts September 7 and residents interested in participating are encouraged to sign up quickly for one of the 25 available spots.

The nine-week course provides an in-depth look at JCPD operations, how it is organized and what policies it follows in setting a high standard for community policing.

The academy meets every Tuesday night and includes classroom instruction (criminal investigations, internal affairs, narcotics, CSI, Community Services); demonstrations (K-9, SWAT, radKIDS, use of force); and practical exercises (traffic enforcement and firearms).

"We started the academy last February and the first class filled up very quickly. We actually had a waiting list. It was very effective at enhancing communications between the JCPD and residents," said Sgt. Debra Kalish. "We're looking forward to teaching it again."

Open to all Johns Creek residents ages 21 and older who successfully pass the application process and a criminal history check, the JC Citizens Police Academy is limited to 25 people.

Download the application here or get one at JCPD Headquarters, 11445 Johns Creek Parkway. Applications must be submitted by August 24, 2010. If accepted, there is a $25 program fee.
