National community garden group to visit Newtown Park garden

8/4/2010

Newtown Park Community GardenNewtown Park Community Garden is one of three gardens to be featured in a tour by the American Community Garden Association as part of their 31st Annual Conference on Community Gardening in Atlanta in early August.

The tour is being offered to attendees of the Conference on Sunday, Aug. 8, to highlight the latest trend: community gardens popping up in suburban areas. About 50 participants are expected to visit community gardens in Johns Creek, Alpharetta and Suwanee. Each garden is less than two years old.

Members of the American Community Garden Association have come from all over the country and the world to share their own field experiences and practical applications in gardening, healthy eating and childhood obesity initiatives. This year's theme is "Building Sustainable and Healthy Communities."

The association supports community gardens because they can spur neighborhood and community development, beautify neighborhoods, and provide food, fun and social interaction.

The Newtown Park Community Garden was the brainchild of a Leadership Johns Creek project team. About 40 raised beds were constructed, and are producing vegetables, which people can eat or give away.
