Now when runners and joggers use the Johns Creek Greenway, they can improve their knowledge as well as their bodies.

The Leadership Johns Creek "Navigators" team has placed four historical markers, paid for by local businesses, along the pathway along Medlock Bridge Road.

"Now it's more than a just a walking trail," said Mayor Mike Bodker. "You can get a dose of history, too. People don't realize the rich history here even before the City was founded."

The inaugural Leadership Johns Creek class divided into groups and took on various community projects, including a community garden at Newtown and a duck pond at Autrey Mill Nature Preserve and Heritage Center.

The markers measure 2 feet by 2 feet, and cost about $1,800 each.

Milton markerGoing from north to south, the first marker, which hails the history of the Shakerag or Sheltonville community, is located near Medlock Bridge Road and Hospital Parkway. It was sponsored by State Farm Insurance.

The second marker is near Grove Point Road in front of the Warsaw Cemetery. CH2M HILL, the company that provides most day-to-day municipal services at City Hall, teamed up with Warsaw Church & Cemetery Preservation to buy the marker commemorating the old church and cemetery.

Chattahoochee River markerThe third marker focuses on former Milton County, which merged with Fulton County during the Great Depression era. The marker was sponsored by Riley, McLendon LLC, the law firm that serves as the City's legal counsel.

The fourth marker is on the Greenway near Old Alabama Road. It talks about the Chattahoochee River and its role in developing the area. It was sponsored by Grissom Law LLC, Optech Monette, LLC, and Blount Construction Company, Inc.
