Latest GDOT update on McGinnis and SR 141 projects
7/27/2010
GDOT has provided the following update for the McGinnis Ferry widening, McGinnis Ferry Bridge over the Chattahoochee, and SR 141 widening projects:
McGinnis Ferry Widening
Two grading crews are working on the east end of the project from west of the Shakerag Trace subdivision entrance to the Forsyth County Soccer Fields. Grading operations include excavating cut material to place in fills for the new westbound lanes. A crew has also started laying storm drain in this area. This work will allow the contractor to construct the new westbound lanes and prepare for the next traffic shift.
The contractor's concrete crew continues to place sidewalk at various locations throughout the project.
The signal contractor is continuing to work on new signal installations at various project locations.
The contractor is planning another traffic shift at the end of August, starting just west of the Chattahoochee River and continuing to Johns Creek Parkway (East). Traffic will be shifted onto new westbound lanes.
The only long range milestone is the traffic shift (above) scheduled for the end of August.
The scheduled completion date for this project is April 30, 2011.
McGinnis Ferry Bridge over the Chattahoochee
The barge is in the river and drilling is underway for caissons, part of the footings for the new bridge. It should take about a month to drill for caissons. Drilling equipment is temperamental so this work isn't just weather permitting, it is also drill permitting. Currently no work is being done on top of the bridge.
The scheduled completion date for this project is April 30, 2012.
SR 141 Widening
Each intersection is reviewed to determine if it meets Federal guidelines for installation of a traffic signal based on the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. The intersection of State Route 141 and Majors Road met those requirements. A new traffic signal at this intersection should become operational this afternoon, weather permitting.
Crews are finishing installation of the base on the new southbound lanes of SR 141 from Brookwood Road to Deer Lake/Granite Lane. Weather permitting, pavers are scheduled to start overnight asphalt work today. Once paving is completed, traffic will be shifted to the "new southbound" lanes of SR 141 while the original lanes are reconstructed. The grade of the existing lanes must be lowered by approximately 6 feet to create better sight distance for motorists.
This 6.5 mile long construction project is 88% complete. Weather permitting, CW Matthews Contracting plans to have State Route 141 widened to four lanes and open to traffic by November 1, 2010. The official project completion date is December 31, 2010. CW Matthews Contracting, Inc. is the prime contractor on this 6.5 mile long project.
