Day 6: Tennis tournament offers top play, crowds, but fans should prepare for heat

7/24/2010

Atlanta Tennis ChampionshipsSaturday at the Atlanta Tennis Championships promises some of the best tennis of the weeklong tournament at the Atlanta Athletic Club - and some of its largest crowds.

For a better experience, Johns Creek emergency officials urged spectators to take precautions because of hot temperatures. The heat index is expected to be about 104 degrees.

"Drink plenty of water before and during the tournament," said Fire Chief Joseph Daniels. "Wear a hat. Wear light-weight and light-colored clothing. Use lots of sunscreen."

As a precaution, the City has fire and EMS personnel at the Atlanta Athletic Club near the courts.

Motorists should try to avoid Medlock Bridge Road if possible. Traffic delays are expected because of normal traffic plus fans trying to park in field across from the Atlanta Athletic Club, and people trying to cross the street could lead to traffic delays.

At 1:30 p.m., former University of Georgia star John Isner is facing Kevin Anderson. Then, after resting up, Isner and partner James Blake will take on John Lipskey and Rajeev Ram. About 7 p.m., No. 9 Andy Roddick and Mardy Fish will square off, followed by a doubles match featuring Rohann Bopana and Kristof Vliegen versus Stephen Huss and Andre Sa.

The tournament closes Sunday.
