Construction on senior services center under way
6/21/2010
Crews have started gutting the interior of the old Newtown school to convert it into a senior center.
The 4,800-square-foot facility is being renovated so that it has two classrooms, a kitchen, a meeting hall, an office, and two large studios.
The construction should be finished by late fall or early winter, and the center should be functioning by the end of the year.
Most of the exterior work is already finished. Employees with contractor Possibility Construction from Alpharetta have put in a roundabout, parking, landscaping and utilities. Now they're adding walls, installing interior plumbing, fixing ceilings, and trying to salvage the hardwood floors.
The City Council committed $565,000 of federal grant money to renovate the historic old school.
Senior Services North Fulton will organize the programs that will be held at the center after talking to older people in the area. Typically Senior Services North Fulton provides lectures on health and wellness for seniors and at some locations, the agency offers ceramics classes, card groups, and exercise classes.
