About 750 music lovers relaxed and picnicked on the grass at Newtown Park on June 12 for the City of Johns Creek "Music in the Park" concert by the Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra.

The symphony, led by Conductor J. Wayne Baughman, performed a variety of tunes, such as Overture to the Pirates of Penzance, several Beatles songs, themes from the 007 series, and songs from Phantom of the Opera.

Children had their faces painted, balloons were twisted into fanciful hats and shapes, and an artist sketched caricatures. Strings of red, white and blue beads were handed out for youngsters as well.

Volunteer supporters for the professional orchestra judged the casual spreads for the Best Music-Themed picnic, which went to the Roth Family and Baby Max. The winner of the Best Georgia Picnic category was awarded to Four Friends on a Summer Day. And the Best Musical-Themed Picnic honors went to Happy 50th Birthday Fancy Picnic with Flare.

The event chair, Council Member Karen Richardson, thanked her fellow council members for the support and the sponsors, the Fulton County Arts Council, the Johns Creek Foundation, Misenheimer Design, the Music Performance Fund, and the Johns Creek Herald. Chick-fil-A and Harry O's donated a portion of their proceeds to the Johns Creek Public Safety Foundation, which supports the City's police and fire departments.

Winners received tickets for an upcoming symphony performance and complimentary dinners donated by Marlowe's Tavern, Outback Steakhouse and Stoney River.
