JC Leadership volunteers build educational pond
Community service project benefits Autrey Mill
6/11/2010
Several members of the 2010 Class of Leadership Johns Creek spent the last five months designing and building an educational pond at Autrey Mill Nature Preserve.
"The pond – filled with fish, ducks and frogs – will be used as an educational tool for many campers and school groups at Autrey Mill throughout the year," said Randy Ekerberg, at the June 8 dedication of the pond. "Once we knew the great impact it would have, we knew we had to start digging!"
Tasked with doing a community service project as part of their year-long leadership class, Susan Edson, Scott Gentry, Scott Kalish, Leslie Martinez, Marcus Turk, Dolores Ware, Dion Smith, and Eckerberg, labored more than 50 hours with a track hoe, dump truck, and fence post auger to build the 10-by-25-foot pond they had designed.
Business collaborators on the project included The Home Depot Foundation, Gwinnett Medical Center-Duluth, Optech Monette LLC, AtlantaLawns and Alliance Stone.
Other generous contributors were Tripod Photography, and Compelling Signs and Higgins Design Group.
"We wanted to do something that would have a lasting impact on the city where we live and work, and something children, in particular, could enjoy for many years to come," said Smith.
