Learn about composting, maximizing space, rain barrels

The Leadership Johns Creek team that started the community garden at Newton Park will dedicate the garden, and master gardeners will demonstrate various facets of gardening.
The program runs from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 5, at Newtown Park. Master gardeners every 20 minutes will demonstrate how to set up a composting bin, how to get the most out of gardening space, and how to set up rain barrels.
Volunteers finished building the 39 raised beds on May 15, and some folks started planting immediately. The community garden, Johns Creek's first, was located on vacant space at the park.
Thirty-five raised beds measure four feet by eight feet and are 12 inches high. Another four beds designed for older gardeners are 36 inches high so they don't have to stoop so much.
The garden spots have been assigned to people who applied for them.
The garden was built by the "Carpe Diem" team of Leadership Johns Creek. The City will provide water but will not incur any other expenses related to the garden.
The garden involves seniors, adults and families, and provides exercise, education, healthy food, and helps create a sense of community. Produce can only be used by the growers unless it's donated.
