Latest GDOT update on McGinnis and SR 141 projects

5/25/2010

road constructionGDOT has provided the following update for the McGinnis Ferry widening, McGinnis Ferry Bridge over the Chattahoochee, and SR 141 widening projects:

McGinnis Ferry Widening

  • A grading crew moved to the west end of the project last week to resume work from the culvert at Johns Creek towards (SR 141) Medlock Bridge Road on the right side of the project. Grading operations include excavating cut material to place in fills for the new east bound lanes. Crews will also begin laying new storm drain in this area the week after the Memorial Day Holiday.

  • The contractor has mobilized a concrete crew and is placing curb and gutter in the areas starting just west of the Blackstone Way subdivision entrance and continuing to just east of the Riverwalk Landing subdivision entrance. Sidewalk placement will follow.

  • The contractor plans to have an asphalt paving crew start paving in the areas noted above around the 2nd week of June.

  • The signal contractor is continuing to work on new signal installations at various project locations.

  • The traffic shift scheduled for May has been moved to the last of June.

  • The only long range milestone at this time is the scheduled traffic shift in June. Please note that the contractor is continuing to work six 10 hour days on this project every week that weather permits and has no plans at this time to stop working this schedule.

The scheduled completion date for this project is April 30, 2011.

McGinnis Ferry Bridge over the Chattahoochee

The contractor is currently hauling a couple of pieces of the barge in each day. They probably will begin doing bridge construction in the next two or three weeks.

The scheduled completion date for this project is April 30, 2012.

SR 141 Widening

Target dates are tentative and dependant on weather.

  • Crews are putting the "finishing touches" on driveways along State Route 141 from Hemrick Road and Sharon Road. This work includes dressing the shoulders, grassing the slopes, pouring concrete islands and curb, and building inner parcel access. Final paving of these driveways along the "new northbound" lanes of SR 141 will begin May 27, weather permitting.

  • Paving crews will begin work May 27th on the "new northbound lanes" of SR 141 from Mathis Airport Road to Calloway Court.

  • Preparation continues for paving the "new northbound lanes" further south. Crews are finishing removal of fill material and fine grading along SR 141 from Mathis Airport Road to Brookwood Marketplace.

  • As that work concludes, pavers will shift further south on SR 141 and pave from Brookwood Marketplace (Target and Home Depot shopping center) to Sharon Road. The graded aggregate base is completed in this section. Crews will work weekdays to finish paving except for the top one inch of asphalt called "the topping."

Upcoming Construction:

  • A target date of June 15th has been set to split traffic on SR 141 from Brookwood Marketplace to Sharon Road. Weather permitting, one lane of traffic will start running on each side of the median in this area.

  • After traffic is split, crews will lay the "topping" or final asphalt driving surface in the lane not open to traffic and then shift traffic into that newly topped lane. Then crews will top the remaining lane. Once the paving and final striping is in place all 4 lanes will be open, two in each direction from Brookwood Marketplace to SR 9.

  • A target date of July 1st has been set for finishing the asphalt work and striping and opening four lanes from Brookwood Marketplace to SR 9.

The project is currently 84% complete. Rains have slowed work down but there has been no siltation left on the project.

Weather permitting, CW Matthews Contracting plans to have State Route 141 widened to four lanes and open to traffic by November 1, 2010. The official project completion date is December 31, 2010.
