Latest GDOT update on McGinnis and SR 141 projects

5/11/2010

road constructionGDOT has provided the following update for the McGinnis Ferry widening, McGinnis Ferry Bridge over the Chattahoochee, and SR 141 widening projects:

McGinnis Ferry Widening

  • Grading operations have moved to the area between Johns Creek Parkway (East) and New Boyd Road on the left side of the project. This includes excavating cut material to place in fills for the new west bound lanes. Crews are also laying new storm drain in this area.

  • The contractor will place Graded Aggregate Base (stone) in the areas noted above. After the stone is placed the curb / gutter can be placed, then the asphalt.

  • The contractor plans another traffic shift for sometime in mid May.

  • The signal contractor continues work on new signal installations at various project locations.

  • The contractor plans to have a concrete crew start placing curb and gutter from Blackstone Way to the end of the project on the south side. This should start around the 3rd week of May (if Fulton County Water has completed their relocation work).

  • The contractor plans to mobilize a crew to the west side of SR 141 to start laying the new storm drain system. The work will start at Johns Creek Parkway (west), and proceed toward SR 141 on the north side of McGinnis Ferry. After the storm drain is complete grading should resume on the south side of McGinnis Ferry from Sargent Road to SR 141. Schedules could change.

  • The only long range milestone at present continues to be the proposed traffic shift in May, noted above.

McGinnis Ferry Bridge over the Chattahoochee

Crews haven't been able to work since last Monday because the current has been too swift due to heavy rains and water releases from the dam. The contractor is building a temporary bridge to hold equipment to work on the current McGinnis Ferry bridge.

SR 141 Widening

Crews are hauling stone and working the base of SR 141 between Callaway Court and Mathis Airport Road. They are also hauling waste material from the Mathis Airport Road grade change (14 feet). It will take some time to remove that amount of material. The paving is 90% complete on mainline of SR 141 from Hembrick Road to Sharon Road. Crews are dressing the shoulders, grassing and pouring sidewalks now.

Weather permitting, CW Matthews Contracting plans to have SR 141 widened to four lanes and open to traffic by November 1, 2010. The official project completion date is December 31, 2010.
