Southeast college lacrosse teams battle for championship this weekend

Tournament to feature 14 Division I and Division II teams
4/21/2010

SouthEastern Lacrosse ConferenceThe SouthEast Lacrosse Conference Championship series starting Friday promises some high-powered lax with Florida State University, which went to the national college club lacrosse championship tournament, as the team to beat.

This is the sixth year that Johns Creek has played host to the three-day tournament, the largest collegiate club lacrosse series in the country. Eight Division I teams are competing and six Division II teams are in the brackets as well. Games will be played at all three Johns Creek high schools.

At Chattahoochee High School at 5:30 p.m., Georgia, seeded fourth, is dueling 5-seeded Clemson. A relatively young, athletic University of Georgia team will have to fend off Clemson's solid attack. The Bulldogs are considered opportunistic and dangerous offensively, while Clemson sports a stingy defense.

Then at 8 p.m., Florida State duels rival Florida in what could be a shoot-out. Both teams bring high-powered offenses. Florida State, the No. 1 seed, fought its way to the national lacrosse club quarter-finals last year, and carries much of its strength over from last year. The Seminoles bring an aggressive and skilled offense and a solid defensive team.

Florida will be trying avenge a shellacking by Florida State suffered a couple of weeks ago. The Gators are led by Attackman Ryan Akin, one of the top scorers nationally.

Over at Johns Creek High School at 5:30 p.m., No. 3 seeded Tennessee will square off against No. 6-seed Georgia Tech. Tennessee will be sparked by sharp-shooter Attackman Jack Cleary, but Georgia Tech is anchored by Goalie Sam Karpowicz.

At 8 p.m. Friday, Virginia Tech will face off against Wake Forest. Virginia Tech is known for its defense, but Wake Forest is viewed as a team that plays smart lacrosse.

The Division II opens at Northview High School at 5:30 p.m.

Play resumes Saturday with the championships on Sunday.

A single-day adult ticket is $10; weekend passes cost $20. Students 18 and under pay $5 per day, $10 for the weekend, or they get in free if they're wearing a lacrosse jersey. Tickets are available at the gate.
