Latest GDOT update on McGinnis and SR 141 projects
4/13/2010
GDOT has provided the following update for the McGinnis Ferry widening, McGinnis Ferry Bridge over the Chattahoochee, and SR 141 widening projects:
McGinnis Ferry Widening
Grading operations continue on the east end of the project between the Forsyth County Soccer Fields and the Chattahoochee River. Grading operations include hauling select fill material to build the new east bound lanes.
The contractor will be placing Graded Aggregate Base (stone) in the areas approximately one half mile east of the Old Atlanta / Bell Road intersection on the south side of the project to the Forsyth County Soccer Fields. After the stone is placed in this section the curb / gutter can be placed, then the asphalt.
The contractor plans another traffic shift for the above area sometime in mid May (as of now, the only long range milestone).
The signal contractor is continuing to work on the new signal installations at various locations on the project.
The contractor plans to have a concrete crew start placing curb and gutter from Blackstone Way to the end of the project on the south side. This should start sometime around the last week of April.
Note: The planned move to the Sargent Road end of the project in mid April has been moved back to mid May as there is more work to be done at the east end for the upcoming shift in May.
McGinnis Ferry Bridge over the Chattahoochee
Nothing has changed since the last update: The project to widen the bridge over the Chattahoochee is still in the utility relocation stage and is on schedule.
On Wednesday, March 24th we began placing fill dirt at the west end of the bridge. We completed the clearing on Monday, March 29th.
The project is still scheduled to be completed at the end of April, 2012. No lane closures are allowed between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. during the week.
SR 141 Widening
Crews shifted traffic to the "newly constructed lanes" of SR 141 from Bagley Road to Sharon Road so the "old" lanes of SR 141 from Vaughn Road to Sharon Road can be upgraded.
Asphalt has been milled out and removed from Hemrick to Sharon Road.
Paving is underway in the area.
Crews are laying a new pipe for drainage at Hemrick.
An extensive grade change at Mathis Airport Road is underway. Crews are lowering Mathis Airport Road 14 feet. The intersection is currently closed for this work to occur. Weather permitting, Mathis Airport Road will reopen to traffic in the next few days.
There is a signed detour from SR 141 to Bagley Road to Mathis Airport Road.
The project is currently 79% complete. Weather permitting, CW Matthews Contracting plans to have State Route 141 widened to four lanes and open to traffic by November 1, 2010.
The official project completion date is December 31, 2010. CW Matthews Contracting, Inc. is the prime contractor on this 6.5 mile long project.
