Historic Newtown SchoolJohns Creek will have a senior center in early 2011 if everything goes as planned.

The City Council on Monday voted to spend $565,000 of federal grant money to renovate the historic Newtown School for use as a senior center.

The center will fill a need in the community, said Liz Igleheart, executive director of Senior Services North Fulton, which will operate the center.

"There's no place for them to go socialize and meet new people," she said.

The facility, about 4,800 square feet, will feature two classrooms, a meeting hall, two large studios, and an office. Senior Services North Fulton will offer classes and programs for older people. The agency operates senior centers in Sandy Springs, Roswell and Alpharetta.

"Typically we have lectures on health and wellness for seniors and at some locations we have ceramics classes, card groups, and exercise classes," Igleheart said. "We're going to have a lot input from the seniors in the area before we decide anything."

The City will pay for utilities, estimated to be $25,000 a year.

Construction should start by early summer.

Senior Services North Fulton also provides transportation for seniors and manages the area's Meals on Wheels program.
