30 raised beds planned

gardeningJohns Creek gardeners, grab your trowels and seeds. A community garden with 30 raised beds is being planned for Newtown Park this spring.

The project of a Leadership Johns Creek team, the Newtown Park Community Garden is tentatively set to be located on some empty space next to a future senior center.

The City Council will consider final approval on April 12, which means planting time would be in early May.

The garden area will measure 100 feet by 40 feet, and will be built by the "Carpe Diem" team of Leadership Johns Creek. The City will provide water but will not incur any other expenses related to the garden.

The group has received commitments of material from two landscape companies, Home Depot, Newtown Park Community Foundation, and Whole Foods. Planters will be 4 feet by 8 feet, and will be designed to be moveable if necessary.

As envisioned, the garden will involve seniors, adults and families, providing exercise, education, healthy food, and help create a sense of community. Gardeners will be selected by lottery, and their produce can only be used by them unless it's donated.

There will be rules limiting the use of pesticides and herbicides.

Community gardens have been established in several surrounding communities, such as Alpharetta, Roswell, Norcross, and Suwanee. This would be Johns Creek's first community garden.
