The Johns Creek Fire Department recognized 16 of its members for their exemplary public service and lifesaving efforts in 2009 at the first Johns Creek Fire Annual Awards Banquet, held Feb. 6, at the Standard Club.

"These individuals were exceptional in their contributions to the department and our community last year," said Fire Chief Joseph Daniels. "It's important that we take time to recognize these achievements, because they help spur even greater ones."

Firefighter II Carlos Garcia was chosen the 2009 Firefighter of the Year for his charactor, performance of duty, motivation, teamwork and community service.

Awarded the 2009 Fire Service Leadership Award, Capt. Cam Huynh focuses on technical rescue training and is also an emergency medical technician.

Sgt. Doug Stephenson had just gotten off work last October when he came upon two people trapped inside a car on fire off I-75. Local emergency responders had not yet arrived, so Stephenson stopped and helped, pulling one victim from the vehicle and attempting to help the second, before the car erupted in flames, burning Stephenson. For his heroic efforts Stephenson was awarded the Firefighter Cross.

In 2009, Johns Creek firefighters implemented four successful cardiac arrest resuscitations. In two cases, family members administered CPR prior to the arrival of emergency responders so they were awarded Civilian Life Saving Awards.

For their critical actions in these incidents, the following received Life Saving Awards:

  • Capt. Tyrees Jones, Firefighter II Johnnie Fowler, Firefighter II Joseph "Trey" Tipton, Lt. Curtis Walther, and Firefighter II Robert Jackson for the Jan. 14, 2009, resuscitation of an infant in cardiac arrest.

  • Lt. Mathew Moseley, Fire Apparatus Operator Richard Albritton, Firefighter II Reginald Ferguson, Firefighter II Brian Johnson and Firefighter II Ty Tyson for their successful resuscitation of an adult woman in cardiac arrest last October.

  • Fire Apparatus Operator Darren "Buddy Lee" Johnson, Firefighter II Robert Scott, Firefighter II Joshua Cater, Sgt. Greg Stubbs and Firefighter II Gregory Rock for providing basic and advanced life support measures to save an infant drowning victim in cardiac arrest last June.

  • Lt. Matthew Mosley, Fire Apparatus Operator Richard Albritton, Firefighter II Brian Johnson, Firefighter II Reginald Ferguson and Firefighter II Anthony Saunders for the resuscitation of an adult male, who went into cardiac arrest after choking last June.

"We are very proud of these individuals. Members of the Johns Creek community were saved by their skills, bravery and determination," said Daniels.

The Johns Creek Annual Firefighter Awards are sponsored by BB&T Bank on State Bridge Road in Johns Creek.
