Johns Creek has been awarded an $8,025 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice and a $43,000 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to assist in purchasing bulletproof vests and surveillance equipment for the city's Police Department.
"One of the most important pieces of equipment a law enforcement officer can have is a good bulletproof vest. It often means the difference between life and death. And increasing our surveillance capabilities is crucial to enforcement," said Police Chief Ed Densmore. "We are very appreciative of this federal assistance."
The Justice Department grant is coordinated through its Bulletproof Vest Partnership, an initiative designed to provide bulletproof vests and body armor to state and local law enforcement agencies across the U.S. The BVP matching grant pays 50 percent of the cost of new or replacement body armor.
To date, the BVP has awarded grants totaling $173 million to over 11,900 U.S. jurisdictions since it was established through the 1998 Bulletproof Vest Partnership Grant Act.
FEMA awarded the city the $43,000 grant through its Commercial Equipment Direct Assistance Program to purchase surveillance equipment. The grant also includes two years of training and support in use of the equipment.
Since the program's inception in 2005, FEMA has provided roughly 6,800 CEDAP awards worth more than $120 million to support all hazards response capabilities in smaller jurisdictions around the country.
