Teen diversion programs launched

9/1/2009

teenTeens who have received underage drinking or driving violations in Johns Creek can now participate in two new diversion programs that emphasize education over simply punishment for first offenders.

The programs are presented by the Johns Creek Police Department and the city's Municipal Court.

STOP – Solicitor/Teen/Officer/Parent – is a Teen Driver Intervention Program for traffic violators ages 16-20 who are ordered to attend the STOP program's Teen Victim Impact Panel as part of their sentence or Solicitor's Pre-Trial Intervention, or are voluntarily enrolled in the program by their parents, who are emailed if their teen receives a traffic violation. For more information, call 678-512-3444.

The JCPD Underage Drinking Diversion Program is a voluntary alternative to arrest (excluding DUIs and drug offenses) and educates young violators (ages 17-20) on the negative impact of underage drinking. The program offers the opportunity to avoid a permanent criminal record, which could hinder college and career opportunities in the future.

Enrollment is at the discretion of the JCPD, is not court-ordered or part of any probation, and requires mandatory compliance by the violator's parent/legal guardian. A teen violator can participate in the program only one time. For more information, call 678-474-1569.
