JC Firefighters train for emergency rescue
6/15/2009
Johns Creek firefighters recently participated in a series of company-wide technical rescue training drills, while being critiqued by a Georgia Fire Academy Technical Rescue Assessment Team.
The drills, held June 8-10, involved a limited confined space rescue challenge with an injured "victim" who fell through a manhole into a 15-foot high concrete outlet control structure. This concrete structure was inside a water retention area that was approximately 25 feet below the street level.
Firefighters were challenged to come up with the best approach to rescue the "victim" and were evaluated by the Academy.
"The GFA reps were impressed, especially as a new department," said Fire Chief Joseph Daniels. "They thought we did a good job in handling the scenarios and mitigating the problems presented. Training is critical in all aspects of the fire service. Training drills are a great way to evaluate our capabilities."
