2009 National Public Works WeekSince becoming a city, Johns Creek has placed a heavy emphasis on roadway improvements, filling more than 700 potholes, resurfacing 10 miles of streets, installing 430 new traffic signs as well as mowing 1,300 miles of right-of-way and removing almost 2,900 bags of litter from the medians and sides of roads.

On Monday, May 18, in observance of National Public Works Week, the city's Public Works Department invites residents to join them in the City Hall parking lot to meet the people who do all this and so much more. Visitors also can take an up-close look at the equipment they use to get the job done.

It promises to be both informative and fun for the entire family, with displays, food, games and giveaways. Parents should bring their cameras for lots of photo opportunities as the kids are invited to climb on and in the equipment (under supervision, of course).

The Mayor and City Council will be on hand for the event, which takes place from 5 to 7 pm. Council will present a proclamation recognizing National Public Works Week during their meeting that starts at 7.

Instituted as a public education campaign by the American Public Works Association in 1960, NPWW calls attention to the importance of public works in community life. This year's NPWW theme is "Revitalize, Reinvest, Renew." For more information, visit www.apwa.net.

City Hall is located at 12000 Findley Road, at the intersection of Medlock Bridge Road. Please use the Findley Road entrance.
