Learn how to build your own rain barrel, save water

1/8/2009

rain barrelWhile recent rains have dampened the effects of the region's on-going drought, water remains a limited resource. One way to conserve water is through the use of rain barrels. Collected rainwater can be used to water lawns and gardens – which can account for nearly 40% or household water use in the summer, according to the Environmental Protection Agency – top off swimming pools or wash your car. The EPA estimates most homeowners will save about 1,300 gallons of water during peak summer months.

Learn how to build your own rain barrel at a workshop hosted by Keep North Fulton Beautiful and the City of Johns Creek on Saturday, Jan. 24 from 1-3 pm at Fire Station 2, 10925 Roger Circle Drive (near River Trail Middle School and Shakerag Elementary). The program includes a short presentation on water conservation and rain barrel construction, followed by a hands-on workshop where you can make your own rain barrel (and even decorate it if you like).

Cost is $75 (for the entire workshop) or $50 for a "grab-and-go" rain barrel that includes hardware and assembly instructions. Preregistration is required and space is limited. Click here for a registration form. For more information, call 770-551-7766.
