Drum & Bugle Corps show returns to city
8/1/2008
Strike up the band; the Johns Creek Invitational Drum and Bugle Corps show takes the field at Chattahoochee High School on Sunday, August 17 at 6 pm featuring performing groups from six states.
Drum and bugle corps are a lot like marching bands, but with some distinct differences, says Terry Reilley, director and CEO of Alliance Drum and Bugle Corps, which is co-hosting the invitational with the CHS Band Boosters Association.
Comprised of brass and percussion instruments along with color guard performers, corps perform music well beyond the typical level of a college marching band and put on visual shows that are generally more technical and difficult, Reilley says.
With groups coming from Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Virginia and Texas, organizers expect upward of 600 performers, staff and volunteers will visit Johns Creek along with their supporters. Alliance will also compete in this show as well against three other corps in their class (Class A – 65 members or less). There are also two Open Class (over 65 members up to 128 performers) organizations competing after the Class A performances.
Alliance was organized in 2004 and is currently the Drum Corps Associates South Class A Champion, a distinction the group has held since its first year of competition in 2005. That same year Alliance was World Finalists in its division. This year, the group was evaluated by Drum Corps International and was accepted as an Associate Member corps, competing in the DCI Atlantic Division.
