8/20/2007

Monte Vavra, Finance Director of Marietta, Georgia joins the new City of Johns Creek as its first Finance Director, effective September 10, 2007.

Vavra, a native of South Dakota, brings 30 years of experience in municipal government finance in Georgia, Colorado and his home state to his new position with Georgia's 10th largest city.

"Not many people have the opportunity to participate in the start up of a new City. It's an exciting challenge and I'm looking forward to working in a private/public partnership," said Vavra, on Johns Creek's consulting agreement with private municipal services provider CH2M Hill.

During his seven years in Marietta Vavra managed five varied operating divisions – Accounting, Budgeting, Business License, Property Tax, and Purchasing – supervising a variety of municipal financial duties, including accounting and financial reporting, budgeting, tax billing and collections, and successfully secured financing through general obligation bonds, revenue bonds, and lease purchase agreements.

"We are pleased that we could hire someone with Monte's experience in city finances for the City of Johns Creek," said City Manager John Kachmar. "He has the background that will see us through our first several years of establishment and growth as a new city."

Prior to coming to Marietta in 2000, Vavra served as the Finance Officer for the Town of Estes Park, Colorado for 16 years and an accountant for the City of Sioux Falls, South Dakota for eight years.

Vavra holds a Masters in Public Administration from Colorado University, having previously earned undergraduate degrees in Business Administration from National College in Sioux Falls and an accounting degree from Mitchell Area Vocational Technical School in Mitchell, South Dakota.

A Certified Government Finance Officer (GFOA), Vavra served as Vice President of the Colorado Government Finance Officers association in 2000 and a member of the board from 1996-1999. He has been appointed to serve on the Georgia Governmental Finance Officers Association Board for the upcoming year.
