City sets 4.614 % millage rate; maintains previous rate of Fulton

6/29/2007

The Johns Creek City Council has established a 4.614 percent millage rate for the City's first fiscal year 2007, maintaining the millage rate previously levied on property in Johns Creek by Fulton County.

Following three public hearings this month, the Council decided June 28 to maintain the 4.614 percent rate, even though the City's Charter allows up to 4.731 percent without voter approval.

"The higher rate may have allowed a faster resolution of some of the City's service needs and badly needed infrastructure maintenance, but the 4.614 rate seems to be a reasonable balance between speed and fiscal responsibility. Our Council listened to each other and respected the citizens who came to our public hearings or otherwise made their feelings known to us. That's representative government," said Mayor Mike Bodker.

The Johns Creek 4.614 percent rate will be applied to each $1,000 of taxable property value (taxable property = 40% of full assessed value) in the City. All City property tax bills are based on the official assessed value of the property, as determined by the Fulton County Board of Tax Assessors.

By comparison, millage rates for adjoining cities are: Roswell (6.087), Alpharetta (6.60), Duluth (5.191) and Suwanee (5.77).

"The millage rate chosen by the Council represents an effort to manage our City's finances conservatively while at the same time demonstrate to our citizens our desire to build their trust and begin increasing public service levels," said Bodker.

Properties within the municipal boundaries of Johns Creek will no longer be subject to property taxation for the Fulton County Special Services District since its application is limited to unincorporated areas.

The City's property taxes will be billed and collected by the Fulton County Tax Commissioner at the same time as County taxes. This service is provided as an option in the City's Charter, and meets the requirement that the billing schedule for the City's taxes match that of Fulton County.

Property tax bills will be mailed in July and will be due October 15.
