Johns Creek enacts City homestead exemptions

Fulton County to handle application process
2/12/2007

The City of Johns Creek has enacted several homestead exemptions, which will bring increased financial benefits for its citizens and has also arranged to ease the overall exemption application process. To qualify for these exemptions in 2007, however, homeowners must own and occupy their home as primary residence as of January 1, 2007.

Specific details of the new City of Johns Creek Homestead Exemptions can be found at Homestead Exemptions. Here are a few highlights:

  • Homeowners who have already established eligibility with Fulton County in prior years and have filed for current Fulton County homestead exemptions applications with Fulton County by March 1, 2007 do not have to reapply for the new City exemptions, except with the city's Senior Basic Exemption. Exemptions (other than the City's Senior Basic Exemption) will be extended automatically to homeowners within the City of Johns Creek, but you must have filed your homestead exemption applications with the Fulton County Board of Assessors no later than March 1, 2007, to be effective this tax year.

  • Unlike Fulton County's Senior Basic Exemption, the City's new $15,000 Senior Basic Exemption does NOT have an income requirement. So, Johns Creek Seniors who were not able to obtain Fulton County's Senior Basic Exemption in the past because their income was too high will be able to obtain the City's Senior Basic Exemption, but they must apply for this specifically with the Fulton County Board of Assessors through a Special Exemption no later than March 1, 2007.

  • The City's Full Value Exemption is available to disabled individuals of any age and for Seniors 70 years of age or older on or before January 1 of the year in which the application for the exemption is submitted. Certain income requirements must be met by the applicant, who must apply for the County's corresponding Full Value Exemption by March 1, 2007.

For all City exemptions, other than the City's Senior Basic Exemption, there are County exemptions that correspond in terms of eligibility requirements. Therefore, to ease the overall application process for the new City's homestead exemptions, arrangements have been made for the Fulton County Tax Assessors Office to handle the application process and alleviate the need for Johns Creek residents to have to re-apply (with the exception of the Senior Basic Exemption) if they have already been determined to be eligible for the comparable County exemption.

Please note that these homestead exemptions apply only to City taxes and do not affect the portion of the tax bill related to taxes imposed by the Fulton County Board of Commissioners or by the Fulton County Board of Education.
