City expresses condolences on passing of Margaret Krueger
Community Association founding member remembered for 'gracious manner,' 'steely resolve'

JOHNS CREEK, Georgia—January 24, 2008—Johns Creek Mayor Mike Bodker today expressed condolences on the death of citizen and local activist, Margaret Krueger.

"Margaret Krueger was an inspiration to all of us, in the way that she lived, and most importantly, in the way that she led. Her soft-spoken, gracious manner coupled with a steely reserve to get things done helped to establish the foundation of our City," said Bodker.

Margaret Krueger established a home on Buice Road in northeast Fulton County in 1980 and within a year had taken up a role in local zoning issues. She gathered community leaders and helped to organize the Johns Creek Community Association in order to present a united voice on land use issues. It was through that group that Margaret pushed for the Johns Creek Overlay District, putting into words and deeds the vision for what we today know as Johns Creek.

In 1984, Margaret stepped in the political arena launching a voter registration drive that eventually registered more than 15,000 citizens. In 1985, she was formally recognized by the Georgia House of Representatives and the Rev. Martin Luther King Center for her leadership role in that capacity.

In 1986, Mrs. Krueger helped found the Chattahoochee Republican Women's Club and in 1987, she was elected Chair of the 23rd House District Republican Party.

That same year, she took her legendary stand when she refused to make way for a demolition team that had been sent in to dynamite the ravine that served the historic Autrey Mill. Mrs. Kreuger that day began a movement that eventually forged a partnership with Fulton County and local, concerned citizens to create what is now the Autrey Mill Nature Preserve and Heritage Center. She maintained her position on the Board until her death Wednesday.

Mrs. Krueger received a vast array of community awards for her work on behalf of the citizens of Georgia. This past April, she was honored by Speaker Pro Tem Mark Burkhalter and the Johns Creek Foundation with their first Lifetime Achievement in Volunteer Services Award.

"Our city has suffered a tremendous loss," said Bodker. "It is tempered only by the equally tremendous gift of having had Margaret's voice for so long, continually striving to make things better for all of us, one victory at a time. Our thoughts and our prayers go out to Margaret's family at this time."

Viewing will be held 4-8 pm, Saturday, February 2 at Roswell Funeral Home, 950 Mansell Road, Roswell. The funeral service is scheduled for 3 pm, Sunday, February 3 at the Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church Sanctuary, 2750 Old Alabama Road (north campus), Johns Creek. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Autrey Mill Nature Preserve & Heritage Center, 9770 Autrey Mill Road, Johns Creek, GA 30022.
