Johns Creek taps Fulton Fire Dept. veteran
Chief Joseph Daniels to lead city's first force
JOHNS CREEK, Georgia—January 17, 2008—Johns Creek City Manager John Kachmar announced today the appointment of Joseph "Joey" Daniels as the City's first Fire Chief, effective January 28.
Daniels, currently a Battalion Chief with the Fulton County Fire Department, brings more than 25 years of professional firefighting experience in Metro-Atlanta to creating and leading Johns Creek's first fire department, set to launch August 2008.
"This is a wonderful opportunity to play a key part in the building of a new fire department. I truly believe my earlier participation with the city's Public Safety Committee and its resulting recommendations will help in building a strong fire department for Johns Creek," said Daniels.
An Atlanta native, Daniels, 48, joined Fulton County in 1982 as a Firefighter, becoming a Sergeant and Emergency Medical Technician/Paramedic in 1988.
Promoted to Lieutenant in 1993 and then Captain in 1996, Daniels supervised Fire and EMS Companies in busy urban areas, developed and conducted training classes, and managed emergency incident operations. In addition, he served as Training Captain at Fulton County's Public Training Center and Aide to the Deputy Chief of Operations.
Rising to Battalion Chief in 2001, Daniels oversaw the daily administrative and operational functions of each of the 4 battalions throughout the county at different times. Currently, Daniels leads the 4th Battalion, a shift of the Fulton County Fire Department, which serves Johns Creek until August 2008.
Throughout his seven years as a Battalion Chief, Daniels dealt with operational, administrative and logistical issues within the county's $34 million annual Fire Department budget and recently ensured operational compliance with the Inter-Governmental Agreements for Johns Creek and Milton. Daniels also participated in the planning of the Fulton County Fire Department/Georgia Search & Rescue Team and served as the Division Chief over the Emergency Medical Services.
"Joey has helped protect the citizens of Johns Creek for many years. He knows and cares about this community. We are very pleased that he is able to continue his valuable contributions by accepting this position to lead our first Fire Department," said Kachmar.
Daniels holds certification in four levels of the National Interagency Incident Management System as a National Professional Qualification Fire Officer III and Fire Instructor II and as an Incident Safety Officer and CBRN Emergency Responder by the U.S. Domestic Preparedness Office.
He and his wife Susan have five children and one grandchild.
