Johns Creek taps Alpharetta Police Chief as its own
Ed Densmore to build, lead City's first police force
JOHNS CREEK, Georgia—November 26, 2007—Following a five-month search involving 132 candidates from across the southeast, Johns Creek City Manager John Kachmar announced today the appointment of Ed Densmore as the City's first Chief of Police, effective immediately.
Densmore, currently Chief of Police for Alpharetta, GA, brings more than 15 years of law enforcement experience to the challenge of creating Johns Creek's first police department, set to launch in April. "It's an awesome opportunity to come over to Johns Creek and be a part of building a police force from the ground up," said Densmore on hearing of his selection. "It's truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity as a law enforcement professional that I didn't want to pass up."
A native of Hamburg, Michigan, Densmore, 42, joined the Alpharetta Police Department in 1994 as a Uniform Field Training Officer, having begun his law enforcement career in 1992 on patrol with the Decatur Georgia Police Department.
He rose through the ranks at Alpharetta PD as a Sergeant in 1996, a Lieutenant in 2000, a Captain in 2001 and then Deputy Police Chief in August 2004, handling almost every responsibility through those years, from criminal investigations to community service to internal affairs. In 1999 he was selected as the Alpharetta Police Dept's Employee of the Year.
Since his appointment as Alpharetta's Police Chief in July 2006 he has overseen the day-to-day operations of a department of 104 sworn officers, while monitoring the department's budget, vehicle fleet, equipment and employee work plans and appraisals.
"We're extremely pleased that Ed has said 'Yes.' In talking with his colleagues we learned just how well respected he is as a peace officer and manager. He has a fine reputation," said Kachmar.
Densmore holds a B.S. in Criminal Justice from Michigan State University and graduated in 2002 from the Command College at Columbus State University. He graduated in June of this year from the FBI National Academy and holds many certifications, including SWAT (basic and advanced), Hazmat technician and National Incident Management Systems from the Dept. of Homeland Security.
"We went through a long, arduous search process to hire our first Chief of Police. It was a very important decision for this City and we appreciate the help of the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police, which aided greatly in the evaluation efforts, "said Kachmar. "We welcome Ed on board."
