JOHNS CREEK, Georgia—October 25, 2007—Emmy Award-winning 11Alive News anchor/reporter and Johns Creek resident Karyn Greer will serve as emcee for the City's first-ever Founders Day Parade on Saturday, December 1, part of a day-long, family-oriented celebration of the City's birthday.
The parade, sponsored by the Johns Creek Area Council of the Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce, begins at 10 am. It takes place on State Bridge Road heading west from West Morton Road to Kimball Bridge Road, approximately 1.3 miles. Participation is open to organizations, businesses, groups and individuals. The award-winning Chattahoochee and Northview high school marching bands have already signed on to take part, along with Marines, color guards, Scouts, Hummers, Shriners, clowns and a variety of floats.
Greer, a long-time area resident, also hosted the first City Council candidate debates last year. She joined WXIA in August 1999 as a reporter for 11Alive's Special Projects Unit as well as a weekend anchor on the station's 6, 10 and 11 pm newscasts. She previously spent 10 years at Atlanta's WGNX. She started her career in 1983 in Champaign, Ill., and also spent three years in Charleston, S.C. The well-known personality has a history of hands-on community involvement with organizations such as the Arthritis Foundation, and "It's the Journey," the organization responsible for Atlanta's 2 Day Walk for Breast Cancer. The Chicago native and her husband Tony have two sons, Kyle and Tyler.
City officials are still seeking more entries for the inaugural event, encouraging individuals, groups and organizations to join the fun. Application deadline is November 16; applications are available online at www.JohnsCreekGA.gov along with a route map.
The parade is just the start of the day's activities that also include a visit from Santa planned for 1-3 pm at Newtown Park and conclude at City Hall with a musical holiday lighting extravaganza, benefiting Georgia Prevent Blindness starting at 4 pm.
