Johns Creek considering property tax millage rate

JOHNS CREEK, Georgia—May 31, 2007—The City of Johns Creek today announces that it is considering the adoption of a millage rate for 2007 that will require a levy of 4.731 mills, consistent with the legislation passed to create the City.

Each year, the Board of Tax Assessors is required to review the assessed value for property tax purposes of taxable property in the County. When the trend of prices on properties that have recently sold in the County indicate there has been an increase in the fair market value of any specific property, the Board of Tax Assessors is required by law to re-determine the value of such property and adjust the assessment. This is called a reassessment.

When the total digest of taxable property is prepared, Georgia law requires that a rollback millage rate must be computed that will produce the same total revenues on the current year's digest that last year's millage rate would have produced had no reassessments occurred.

However, since the City of Johns Creek was not incorporated prior to December 1, 2006, the City did not have a digest or millage rate for 2006. Therefore, the City cannot calculate a rollback rate in accordance with State law. Accordingly, the adoption of any millage rate for 2007 by the City is technically defined as a tax increase and must be advertised as such.

Before the City of Johns Creek sets a final millage rate for 2007, Georgia law requires three public hearings to be held to allow the public an opportunity to express their opinions on the tax increase. All concerned citizens are invited to attend the public hearings to be held at City Hall at 12000 Findley Road, Johns Creek (Duluth) Georgia at the following dates and times:

  • First public hearing
  • Second public hearing
  • Third public hearing
Monday, June 11 at 7:00 pm
Monday, June 18 at 6:00 pm
Thursday, June 28 at 7:00 pm

Action to adopt the final millage rate for 2007 is scheduled to take place on Thursday, June 28, after the third public hearing is held.
