William F. Riley appointed as City Attorney
JOHNS CREEK, Georgia—April 26, 2007—The City of Johns Creek appointed William F. Riley, as City Attorney, April 23, following a 6-month stint as Acting City Attorney since the City's incorporation.
Riley's appointment followed a review of several Atlanta-based law firms and individual attorneys during a search led by Former Johns Creek Acting City Manager Marie Garret, local attorney Michael Cross, and City Manager John Kachmar.
"I am appreciative of the long hours our selection team put in, and I thank the many candidates who stepped forward in the process," said Johns Creek Mayor Mike Bodker. "Mr. Riley has provided the strongest legal support as our Acting City Attorney during the City's start-up and, based on his outstanding performance in that capacity, he enjoys the full support of Council as we move forward."
A native of Fulton County, Riley is a founding partner in the Marietta law firm of Riley Lewis & McLendon, one of only two in Georgia experienced in representing cities in government/private service partnerships.
As a volunteer counselor, he helped draft the Johns Creek incorporation legislation and represented the Governor's Commission for the City of Johns Creek.
"I am very honored by the Council's support of my appointment and I look forward to continuing my legal counsel to the City and its elected officials going forward," said Riley.
Primarily a trial attorney until he was appointed to the bench in 1995, Riley served as Chief Judge of Atlanta Municipal Court until he retired in 2004 and returned to private practice, focusing on municipal law and development authority representation.
Riley received his law degree from Woodrow Wilson College of Law and was admitted to practice in 1981. He currently serves as Solicitor for the City of Sandy Springs. He has been honored with the State Bar of Georgia's Certificate of Achievement for Outstanding Service and is a two time recipient of the Chief Justice's Commission on Professionalism.
