City of Johns Creek supports Greater Fulton Water Authority
JOHNS CREEK, Georgia—March 27, 2007—The Johns Creek City Council voted March 26 to express support of Senate Bill 306 establishing the Greater Fulton Water Authority.
The bill, sponsored by Senators Judson Hill (R-Marietta), David Shafer (R-Duluth) and Dan Moody (R-Johns Creek), would create an authority, which would be the primary supplier of water and sewer utilities to the cities outside the city limits of the City of Atlanta which are served by Fulton County or the City of Atlanta.
Currently the water and sewer rates for both north and south Fulton are set by the City of Atlanta and then applied to the outlying municipalities, leaving customers no elected voice in the setting of their rates.
"It is critical for all our citizens that the accountability of those who set water and sewer rates within a service area represent those citizens to whom the rates are applied," said Johns Creek Mayor Mike Bodker.
The Authority would be made up of the three members of the Fulton County Board of Commissioners who have the greatest number of water and sewer customers served by the authority, one mayor from a city in north Fulton and one mayor from a city in south Fulton.
"It has been shown that an Authority would be able to more efficiently and economically provide water and sewer services. With this in mind, we respectfully support Senate Bill 306," said Bodker.
Senate Bill 306 crossed over into the Georgia House of Representatives for consideration March 27.
