Fourth a time to reflect on country's enduring ideals

July 3, 2008

Mayor Mike BodkerAs we enjoy the many pleasures of the long holiday weekend - backyard barbecues, swimming pools full of joyous youngsters, the beauty of fireworks lighting up the sky, and all the other activities associated with the Fourth of July - we also need to take time to reflect on the enduring ideals of freedom and opportunity envisioned by our Founders.

The courage they demonstrated in signing the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 has continued down through the generations of this great country, carried forward by the valiant men and women who have served and sacrificed to preserve, protect and expand these liberties. We pause to express our gratitude and appreciation for the honor and bravery of those in our Armed Services who continue the fight for freedom throughout the world.

Here in Johns Creek, we will soon celebrate our own form of "Independence Day." July 18 marks the second anniversary of the referendum vote on incorporation of the City. In a small way, some of the same principles that gave birth to our country - a desire to control our own destiny, to be free of a distant government unresponsive to our needs - also paved the way to cityhood.

In counting our abundant blessings, however, it also is important to remember that with freedom comes responsibility. Be an active participant in making our community and our country a better place. Make your voice heard to your government at all levels. Exercise your precious right to vote. For it is true that, to whom much is given, much is expected.

The City Council, City staff and I join in wishing you and your families a safe and joyous Independence Day.

Respectfully,

Mayor Mike Bodker
