Wave ‘Flags Over Johns Creek’ June 14 - July 4
Put your patriotism on display. Participate in “Flags Over Johns Creek” taking place throughout the City between Flag Day, June 14, and Independence Day, July 4.
It’s easy - just fly an American flag outside your home or business during that three-week period. Wouldn’t it be an awesome sight to see flags lining the streets all over Johns Creek?
In addition to encouraging patriotism, we hope this celebration of our country’s freedom and strength will inspire you to think about the meaning and history behind the American Flag, and serve as a show of support for our troops abroad. Here are a few Web sites to help you get started:
Johns Creek Fire Department now recruiting

City establishing property tax rate for 2008
The Fulton County Board of Tax Assessors is required to review assessed values of taxable property each year. When the trend for recently sold properties indicates an increase in value, by law it must re-determine (reassess) property values.
As a result of reassessment, the property tax collected by the City under the current millage rate is expected to increase by 4.74%. (This does not include new construction and property improvements.) Before the City sets its final millage rate for 2008, two public hearings remain where you can express your opinions on this tax increase: June 16 at 11:30 am and 6 pm.
Action to adopt the final millage rate is scheduled to take place at the June 16 Council Meeting following the third public hearing. All meetings are in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 12000 Findley Road, 3rd floor.
 Solid Waste Plan
The Georgia Comprehensive Solid Waste Management Act requires cities to develop a solid waste plan to encourage those who generate waste and those who haul it away to cut back through reduction, reuse, recycling, composting and other methods.
The City Council held an initial public hearing on June 2. An internal work group will now develop a draft plan, presented at a second public hearing prior to Council approval. It will then be reviewed by the Atlanta Regional Commission and state Department of Community Affairs. Once DCA approves it, it will come back to Council for adoption. Officials hope to complete the process by fall.
City officials stress that development of the required solid waste plan is not designed to change how independent haulers in the city serve their customers. Rather, it is intended to examine what is currently done and how the City can improve on that same level of service.
1st Comprehensive Plan public hearing June 10
June brings the first of three public hearings on the Community Agenda portion of Comprehensive Plan 2030.
The first two steps of the process were the Community Assessment, or research phase, and the Community Participation phase, in which citizen input was gathered. Planners have now drafted the Community Agenda - the plan itself - which articulates our vision for the future as well as the strategy for achieving that vision, encompassing such topics as Issues and Opportunities, Vision and Policy Objectives, and a Future Development Map.
The first public hearing is before the Planning Commission on Tuesday, June 10, at 7 pm in the Council Chambers, 3rd floor of City Hall, 12000 Findley Road. Additional public hearings will be held before the Mayor and City Council on July 14 and again Nov. 11 prior to final adoption.
Complete information about the Comp Plan is available here.
JCPD offers businesses a ‘shield’ against crime
City businesses can reduce their chances of becoming a victim of crime thanks to a new JCPD community service called SHIELD - a crime prevention and education program that “connects” businesses with the JCPD and each other.
The free program offers business owners regular email alerts on crime in the City, a SHIELD window sticker (sends a signal to potential criminal elements) and the opportunity to take classes on topics such as burglary prevention, security assessment survey, self defense, identity theft prevention, and check and credit card fraud prevention. Interested in more information? Visit Community Services or contact Sgt. Debbie Kalish at 678-474-1587.
