Johns Creek, GA mailing address may be soon
Residents in the 30022, 30097 and 30005 zip codes may be able to start using Johns Creek, GA, as their mailing address sometime in June, according to the U.S. Postal Service.
U.S. Congressman Tom Price and Johns Creek Mayor Mike Bodker have been working closely with Postal Service representatives for several months to come up with the best solution on how to deliver mail to a new city that encompasses five different zip codes, all of which are shared with adjoining jurisdictions.
The Service's proposed solution would allow residents in 30022, 30097 and 30005 to start using Johns Creek in their mailing address, but unfortunately, not those residents in 30024 (Suwanee) and 30076 (Roswell).
"I've been having conversations with the Postal Service, but so far it has proven too difficult to get the changes made for 30024 and 30076," said Mayor Bodker. "The Postal Service may still reprogram 30022, 30097 and 30005 this summer. We will continue to work on bringing Johns Creek, GA to the remaining citizens as soon as possible."
Until further notice, all residents should continue to use their current mailing address. If changes do occur in June, as expected, official notice will be given and publicized. Please continue to visit our website for updates.
City Attorney appointed
William F. "Bill" Riley was appointed City Attorney, April 23, following his 6-month stint as Acting City Attorney since incorporation.
A Fulton County native, Riley is a founding partner in Riley Lewis & McLendon, one of only two Georgia law firms experienced in representing cities in government/private service partnerships.
As a volunteer counselor, he helped draft the Johns Creek incorporation legislation and represented the Johns Creek Governor's Commission.
Riley received his law degree from Woodrow Wilson College of Law and was admitted to practice in 1981. He was appointed to the bench in 1995, and served as Chief Judge of Atlanta Municipal Court until he retired in 2004 and returned to private practice.
He currently serves as the City of Sandy Springs Solicitor and is a two time recipient of the Chief Justice's Commission on Professionalism.
Riley's appointment followed an extensive review of several Atlanta-based legal firms and attorneys who expressed interest in the position.
City completes purchase of Autrey Mill
The City now owns the historic Autrey Mill Nature Preserve & Heritage Center, having completed purchase of the 46-acre site earlier this month from Fulton County.
Set in a wooded ravine with nature trails, abundant wildlife and an old 1800s gold mine shaft, Autrey Mill is a throwback to the way this area looked when it was still just woods and farmland. A house, church, general store and other buildings – all from the 1800s and originally in other parts of North Fulton – have been re-located to the site to create what will one day be a village of the community's past.
Fun programs for children are offered throughout the year, but Autrey Mill is particularly popular in the summer when its day camps are in full force.
The City's newest park is located at 9770 Autrey Mill Road, off Old Alabama Road, across from Country Club of the South. Phone: 770-360-8844.
Signal re-timing nears completion on GA-141
Only State Bridge intersection remains
All but one of the traffic signals on Medlock Bridge Road/GA-141 from Holcomb Bridge Road to Johns Creek Parkway have been retimed to increase traffic flow along the major north/south corridor.
The only "glitch" in the improved signalization remains the intersection of State Bridge, which won't be retimed until sometime shortly after GDOT completes their State Bridge construction improvements at the end of June.
City Traffic Services Manager Tom Udell says the re-timing was part of a year-long Metro Signal Timing Project initiated by Gov. Sonny Perdue. Additional improvements set to start this summer on GA-141 include repaving, enhancing turn lanes and adding pedestrian accesses.
Bodker seeks alliance with area mayors
Initiates North Fulton Municipal Association
About three months ago Mayor Bodker suggested to his fellow North Fulton mayors that they join together to represent area issues and concerns to legislators and government agencies.
"There is more power if we can speak as one voice," said Bodker. "In addition, the association provides a catalyst for our cities to work cooperatively to address our region's challenges."
The result is the newly formed North Fulton Municipal Association, which will include Johns Creek and the cities of Roswell, Alpharetta, Sandy Springs, Milton and Mountain Park, pending approval by each City Council.
An example of issues the association would tackle is the recently approved 1 percent MARTA sales tax extension, which all six North Fulton cities opposed.
