Road improvement updates
Old Alabama / McGinnis Ferry / GA 141

This summer will bring the start of several important road improvement projects in Johns Creek:  the long-delayed widening of McGinnis Ferry from the Chattahoochee river to Sargent; resurfacing of Jones Bridge; and adding turn lanes on Medlock Bridge at State Bridge and Old Alabama.

road workAs these road projects begin, others are set to be completed:  the 3-year-long widening of State Bridge Road, and intersection improvements at Jones Bridge and Sargent and Douglas are all set to be finished by June.

Funding from the state and federal governments is paying for all these projects. No matching funds are needed from the City of Johns Creek.

The "Pothole Posse" – City staff's nickname for road crews currently "attacking" potholes in our City streets – began an aggressive program this month to fill all potholes within the city until streets can be resurfaced.

1 cent SPLOST passes again
City supported 1-cent tax for schools

Several weeks prior to the Nov. 20 extension of Fulton County's one-cent Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) the Johns Creek City Council publicly lent its support of the effort.

City Council voted Feb. 26 to pass a resolution in support of SPLOST, which will for the next five years pay for capital improvement projects like additional classrooms, transportation and technology improvements, allowing for general funds to be used on class instruction.

"Schools are the backbone of our community and keeping them strong benefits our entire city. SPLOST has actually helped lower our property taxes," said City Council Member Liz Hausmann. "The cost of school construction does not rest solely on Fulton County property taxpayers with SPLOST."

Every Johns Creek school will receive funding, but major projects include: a new $60+ million high school; 23,600 square feet of classroom space at Barnwell ES; and 16,800 square feet of classroom space at Chattahoochee.

Benefit for Autrey Mill & Ocee Arts Center
Outstanding volunteers to be honored

Mayor's BallTwo of the City's most important cultural, non-profit organizations will be the beneficiaries of the first Mayor's Ball, Saturday, April 28, at the Atlanta Athletic Club.

Complimentary cocktails begin at 6 pm, followed by dinner and dancing. The highlight of the evening will be the presentation of the City's first Volunteer Awards. Outstanding citizens who've had an impact on our community's development through their volunteer efforts will be honored.

The Ball is hosted by The Johns Creek Foundation, a not-for-profit
501(c)(3) corporation chaired by Mayor Mike Bodker and dedicated to supporting volunteer efforts in Johns Creek.

For information and tickets call Patty Hansen at 678-512-3324.

Northview hosts college lacrosse
SELC returns to Johns Creek April 20-22

SouthEastern Lacrosse ConferenceFor the third consecutive year, Northview High School has been selected as the host for the SouthEastern Lacrosse Conference's (SELC) Championship Weekend April 20-22. It's perfect timing, too, as April 21 is designated as "Georgia Lacrosse Day."

Teams expected to participate in this regional pre-cursor to the May national championships are: (A Division) UGA, Georgia Tech, Florida State, Florida, Wake Forest, and Virginia Tech; (B Division) Emory, Savannah College of Art and Design, and Eckerd College. Founded in 1987, the SELC is a collegiate lacrosse club league, which provides organized, regional college level lacrosse competition for an ever-increasing number of students across the South.

Northview was chosen to host the tournament again because of its state-of-the-art artificial turf, local restaurants and hotels, and the overall interest in the sport in Johns Creek.
