Clean Air Schools
The Clean Air Schools initiative empowers schools, students and parents to take action for air quality within their school and community. Sponsored by the Clean Air Campaign, a non-profit that works to improve air quality and reduce traffic congestion in Georgia, the program is free and open to all preschool, elementary, middle and high schools.
Schools can apply for the program any time and must choose at least one of three approaches:
-
No-Idling Program: Encourages parent drivers and school bus drivers to turn off their engines when dropping off or waiting for students, decreasing harmful emissions.
-
Air Quality Lesson Plans: An entire library of lesson plans is available for grades 1-12 that supports environmental education efforts and builds on science, math, social studies and other skills.
-
Ride The Bus! For Clean Air: Designed to get more students on the bus and out of cars that contribute to traffic on and around school grounds.
Barnwell Elementary, Fulton Science Academy Middle, Shakerag Elementary, State Bridge Crossing Elementary, and Wilson Creek Elementary schools in Johns Creek are participating Clean Air Schools.
Evergreen School Program
Promoting environmental stewardship by providing resources, education and support for all public & private schools in North Fulton is the goal of the Evergreen School Program from Keep Johns Creek Beautiful.
Open to any school in Johns Creek, the program partners with teachers, PTA members, and administrators to define environmental projects for the school year, and hosts school workshops on outdoor classrooms, recycling, and gardening.
The program is consistent with the Georgia Performance Standards and offers age-appropriate classroom activities: "RRR Recycling Rangers" for Kindergarteners and "Enviroscape-Non Point Source Pollution" for third graders, for example.
An awards program at the end of the school year recognizes school achievements in several areas of environmental sustainability.
Rain Barrel Workshop
Each spring the city hosts a hands-on (make and take) rain barrel workshop, open to all residents to learn how to construct and install a rain barrel to reap the benefits of water harvesting.
