Latest GDOT update on McGinnis and SR 141 projects

3/16/2010

road constructionGDOT has provided the following update for the McGinnis Ferry widening, McGinnis Ferry Bridge over the Chattahoochee, and SR 141 widening projects:

McGinnis Ferry Widening

  • Grading operations continue on the east end of the project between the Forsyth County Soccer Fields and the Chattahoochee River. These include hauling in select fill material to build new eastbound lanes and placing new storm drain.

  • The contractor will also be grading between New Boyd Road and Lakefield Drive on the westbound lanes, with new storm drain placed in this area.

  • The traffic signal contractor is continuing to work on new signal installations at various locations throughout the project.

  • The new right turn lane from West Hospital Drive to McGinnis Ferry Road eastbound was installed and operational Monday, March 8. Restriping of the intersection at Sargent Road/McGinnis Ferry was completed Monday, March 15. (The Johns Creek Police Department had expressed concerns about this intersection.)

  • Placement of sidewalk and curb/gutter continues at various locations on the project.

Note: The contractor was unable to work a total of 5 days between March 1-12 due to rain.

McGinnis Ferry Bridge over the Chattahoochee

The project to widen the bridge over the Chattahoochee is still in the utility relocation stage. Clearing is almost complete and the contractor is hauling in fill material to prepare to drive pile for the bridge supports. Note: Dump trucks will be coming and going in the project area.

The project is still scheduled for completion the end of April, 2012. No lane closures are allowed between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. during the week.

SR 141 Widening

The detour to facilitate reconstruction of the Brookwood and Caney Roads intersection has ended. Crews finished the paving work Saturday, March 6 and reopened Brookwood Road at State Route 141 on March 9.

Traffic is now shifted on State Route 141 from Vaughn Road to Sharon Road. This is part of the GDOT staged construction plan: crews build new lanes to the state route then traffic utilizes them while the original lanes are being reworked. Now that traffic is shifted, crews will concentrate work in two areas: along Mathis Airport Road and on SR 141 from Old Alpharetta Road to Sharon Road.

This 6.5 mile long construction project is 76% complete. The project widens SR 141 to a four lane divided highway from McGinnis Ferry Road to SR 9.
